Typewriter to send message in Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup
FOLLOWING a series of near-misses in the top grade, the big stepping Typewriter has taken a drop in class for this and could now return to his winning ways when he competes in the Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup feature for Open Allowance horses at Caymanas Park today.
Nine races are carded, and the Nigel B Nunes has attracted a very good field of six in-form starters who will all thoroughly enjoy the distance. Post time for the event is set at approximately 4:55 pm with first post at 1:15 pm.
The far-striding five-year-old gelded son of Western Classic out of Doc’s Paladin (Boundary) has failed twice to win at the top level this season, but not by much.
Therefore, the drop in class should do his confidence a world of good as earlier performances indicate that he has the beating of his five opponents even though saddled with the big weight, but it will be no Sunday afternoon stroll at the Park.
What Typewriter has in his favour for this afternoon’s gallop however, is that his only success for the season, from his four starts, came over the distance and that he won the event last year in fine style.
Typewriter’s major opponent in the event this year as it was last year is the Derby and St Leger winners. Perfect Neighbour was last year’s winner and Relampago, this year’s.
A note of interest here is that jockey Shane Ellis, who is the normal first call rider by the stables for major events like these, will not ride Typewriter nor Relampago. Dane Nelson will sit atop Typewriter for trainer Spencer Chung, while Jevvanne Erwin will do duty aboard Relampago, as he has done before without success.
Despite the possibility that the race may be decided between Typewriter and Relampago, in racing it could prove injudicious to ignore the ominous presence of the improving chestnut filly, Fantabulous with Paul Francis up, and the five-year-old mare Exotic Gold with the title-chasing Dick Cardenas astride, at the weights.
