JAMAICA’S Veronica Campbell Brown captured her first IAAF Diamond trophy yesterday after edging Ivory Coast’s Murielle Ahoure to win the 100m race at the Zurich Diamond League meeting.

Campbell Brown and Ahoure were both timed in 11.04 seconds (0.7m/s) with the Jamaican given the edge. With the points doubled for the final race in the series she finished with 10 points, three more than Ahoure and compatriot Kerron Stewart.

Commonwealth Games sprint double champion Blessing Okagbare was third yesterday in 11.06 seconds.

Stewart came into the race as the leader with seven points and needed only to finish in the top three to take her first Diamond Trophy and prize money, but finished fifth in 11.19 seconds.

The result will also force the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) to take a decision as to whether Campbell Brown and World Championships 100m champion Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce will get the wild card for next year’s IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.

Both the Diamond Race champion and the world champion are offered wild cards to the next IAAF World Championships, but not if they are from the same country.

Campbell Brown’s Diamond victory came virtually out of nowhere as she had run just once in the series, taking second in Monaco and had to withdraw from Lausanne with an injury.

Tori Bowie’s injury threw a spanner in the works, as she was the runaway leader and would need only to show up today to win the Diamond. An injury in Birmingham, however, forced her out of the race.

Meanwhile, Nickel Ashmeade just missed winning the Diamond in the men’s 200m after he was beaten to the tape by Panama’s Alonso Edward, who edged him 19 points to 18 points.

Ashmeade came into the final race of the series leading the Panamanian by two points and just needed to finish ahead of him to succeed Warren Weir as the Diamond champion.

Edward won in 19.95 seconds with Ashmeade second in 20.05 seconds and Rasheed Dwyer third in 20.21 seconds.

Schillone Calvert and Samantha Henry-Robinson were second and third, respectively, in the women’s B 100m race, beaten by the USA’s Barbara Pierre, who ran 11.15 seconds (0.0m/s).

Calvert ran 11.20 seconds, just edging Henry-Robinson’s 11.21 seconds, while Carrie Russell was fifth in 11.43 seconds.

Commonwealth Games champion Kemar Bailey-Cole, meanwhile, continued his impressive late season showing by winning the 100m in a season’s best 9.96 seconds (-0.3m/s) in an upset of a strong field.

Bailey-Cole, who was coming off a win in Birmingham last weekend, got off to his usual slow start but caught the fast-starting Michael Rodgers and Asafa Powell to win going away.

Rodgers was second in 10.05 seconds and Britains’s James Dasaolu third in 10.06 seconds.

Powell was fourth in 10.07 seconds, while Nesta Carter was sixth in 10.14 seconds.

Jason Livermore was fifth in the men’s 100m B race in 10.23 seconds (0.0m/s) as Great Britain’s Chijindu Ujah won in 10.16 seconds, beating Holland’s Churandy Martina (10.18 seconds) and USA’s Ryan Bailey (10.22 seconds).

Shot putter O’Dayne Richards was fourth with 20.79m as Diamond League leader Reese Hoffa wrapped up the season winning with a season best 21.88m in a brilliant series when he threw under 21.00m just once in six rounds.

Germany’s David Storl was second with 21.47m and USA’s Joe Kovacs third with 21.43m.

Richards opened with 20.53m, then had two throws under 20.00m, fouled his fourth attempt before getting his best mark in the fifth round.

Roxroy Cato finished at the back of the field in the men’s 400m hurdles in 49.32 seconds.

South African Cornel Fredericks upset the field to win in a season’s best 48.25 seconds, as American Michael Tinsley, who won the Diamond, was second in 48.31 seconds, and Javier Culson of Puerto Rico third in 48.53 seconds.
