3,000 sign NY petition against govt in Mario Deane murder case
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A petition against the Jamaican government in the Mario Deane murder case has been handed to Deputy Consul General, Derron McCreath of the Jamaican consulate in New York.
The petition had 3000 signatures after a 2-hour protest outside the consulate this morning.
McCreath met with a three-member delegation led by Miguel Lorne, the attorney representing the family of Deane who was killed while in custody at the Barnett Street Police Station on August 3.
“We told him that why we have demonstrated is not to wash the Jamaican dirty linen in public but to tell the Jamaican government that this has to stop,” Lorne said.
Recent developments surrounding Deane’s case include the moral and legal support of two US attorneys who represented the family of murdered Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.
Additionally, the autopsy on Deane’s body will be conducted under the watch of US pathologist, Dr Michael Baden, who conducted the autopsy on Michael Brown – the 18-year-old man recently shot dead by police in the Ferguson, Missouri.
