THE Arts Foundation at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Peforming Arts (EMCVPA) is excited about tonight’s presentation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet by the Globe Theatre of the United Kingdom.

The mounting of the classic tragedy is part of global celebrations marking the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. The performance at the Little Theatre in St Andrew is another stop in the Globe’s tour of Hamlet in all 205 countries.

According to Coleen Douglas -— head of public relations and marketing at the EMCVPA — the Globe production offers Jamaicans an opportunity to experience Shakespeare at its finest.

“Any production that originated from the Globe Theatre in London captures the tradition and style of the original players and so it will be a wonderful opportunity for Jamaicans to experience,” she said.

For Douglas, Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, and bringing it to Jamaica is apt.

“The themes in Hamlet continue to be discussed in classrooms and literature circles all over the world. The character Hamlet is considered one of the most complex characters of all time,” she addded.

Douglas hopes patrons who view tonight’s show will come away with a renewed appreciation for the arts.

The small-scale production, which toured the UK, Europe, and the United States in 2011 and 2012, is a fresh version of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of deferred revenge.

A new cast of eight actors will perform over two dozen parts. The production runs for two hours and 45 minutes.

The show begins at 7:00 pm with proceeds go toward scholarships and grants for students at the EMCVPA.
