Brown scorches 66, qualifies for US Pro series
OCHO RIOS, JAMAICA — Jamaica’s golfing ace Wesley Brown shot a blistering final round 5 under par 66 on Sunday at the Woodcreek Classic Invitational Tournament, in South Carolina, USA, and in the process secured a permanent spot to play on the high level Pro Series circuit.
Brown had previously competed on the National Golfing Association (NGA) Carolina Series, which is a notch below the Pro Series, but due to his outstanding performances, had earned a shot at the higher rated Pro Series to participate in the Woodcreek Invitational Classic.
The NGA Tour consists of several tours: Pro Series, Carolina Series and Winter Series.
Competing in his first Pro Series event, which started on Thursday and finished Sunday, Brown opened his round with a 69 that left him at -2 and five shots off the lead on the first day. He had to contend with temperatures of 108-110 degrees and slow play over Friday and Saturday and scored 73 and 71, respectively.
The local ace’s ball-striking over the first three days was, in his own words, “solid”. At this stage he was at even par for the tournament and needed to make a move on Sunday to get in red figures.
Having made some adjustments, Brown, who is employed at the Sandals Golf and Country Club, played exceptionally well on the final day, shooting a brilliant 66 to finish at -5 for the tournament.
Congratulations came quickly from the directors of both the Carolina Series and Pro Series.
After the conclusion of the Woodcreek event Sunday, the Pro Series director met with Brown and informed him that as a result of his win at Aberdeen, second-place finish at the Palmetto State Open and performance this past week at Woodcreek Pro Series Invitational, he had earned a permanent spot and qualified to play the full Pro Series for the 2015 series.
In an interview yesterday, Brown said he was happy to have been invited to participate in the Pro Series. “It’s a bigger series with tougher competition and I know I am up to the challenge,” he noted, adding that he has been playing well and getting himself in good positions during the tournaments.
Brown is very confident that he will continue to do his country and his sponsors, Sandals Resorts International, proud.
Brown will next take part in the Brunswick Tournament starting on Thursday.
