Youth Olympics: Jamaica’s Whyte wins women’s 200m gold
MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica — Natalliah Whyte won Jamaica’s first medal by a female at the Youth Olympics after taking gold in the women’s 200m Saturday night Jamaica time at the National Stadium in Nanjing, China.
Jamaica added two medals on the penultimate day of track and field to take its tally to five three gold and two silver after as long jumper Obrien Waysome got a silver but 200m runner Chad walker was disqualified after placing second in the A finals.
Last night Jamaican time, Whyte confirmed her form from the opening round, running away from the field to win in 23.55 seconds (0.7m/s) to win Jamaica’s first ever female medal at these championships.
Dzhoys Koba of Ukraine won the silver in 23.94 seconds with American Brandee Johnson third in 24.28 seconds.
In rainy conditions on Saturday night Waysome recorded a personal best 7.44m on the third of his four jumps to take silver medal behind champion Anatoliy Ryapolov of Russia whose opening jump of 7.54m was his only legal mark of the day.
China’s Peifeng Zhong was third with 7.37m.
