Rio Cobre to flow in Overnight Allowance
THE lightly weighted Campesino has been installed as the 9-5 morning-line favourite in the Overnight Allowance scamper at Caymanas Park today as the four-year-old seeks to end his winless streak in the $715,000 event.
With no sponsored race on the programme, the Overnight Allowance, three-year-olds and upward call is the eighth of 11 races on the card and will highlight the day’s programme. Post time is scheduled at approximately 3:40 pm, with first post at noon.
A son of Compadre trained by Philip Feanny, Campesino will break from barrier #8 in the 1,000 round speed test. Campesino has won four races from his 10 career starts, but has never won over today’s minimum round trip. Nonetheless, the bay gelding is well suited to the distance as was evidenced by his performance on last when going down narrowly to The Guv while going 100 metres farther three weeks ago. And this was after stumbling at the off.
Since then the gelded son out of Yaella (Bold Executive) bred by Lorenzo Robinson has looked quite lively in his preparations at exercise. This, coupled with the lightweight of 51.0kg still intact and the one-time champion jockey Percy Williams remaining in the saddle, should not rule out another quick victory for the Feanny stables.
However, let’s not forget the down in grade Rio Cobre. This six-year-old imported dark bay/brown gelded dasher, trained by Wayne DaCosta, is no mug going the minimum round trip and does not have to be at his best to overturn this bunch.
And with even top weight of 57.0kg with a non-claiming apprentice rider in Shamaree Muir in the irons, is prepared to be among the top finishers. Rio Cobre’s last win was at this level going the distance of 1,000 metres round among what can be described as a better competitive field of runners.
