Win shoots Williams-Mills closer to 400m Diamond League win
Jamaica’s Novlene Williams Mills all but secured the IAAF Diamond League 400m title after a brilliant run yesterday joining sprinter Nesta Carter as two Jamaican winners at the DN Galan meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.
The 32-year-old breast cancer survivor beat a quality field to win in 50.09 seconds, a full metre ahead of a fast charging American Sanya Richards Ross (50.27 seconds) and World Leader Francena McCorory (50.65 seconds).
Commonwealth Games champion Stephenie McPherson was fourth in 51.01 seconds ahead of compatriot and Commonwealth Games bronze medal winner Christine Day (52.03 seconds).
Williams-Mills’ win was her fourth on the circuit and increased her points tally to 18, 10 more than second-placed Richards-Ross with two races to go this season.
Carter, who failed to make the Jamaican team to the Commonwealth Games after being forced out of the Jamaican Trials in late June with a hamstring injury in the semi-finals, produced his best of the season running 9.96 seconds, pushed by the maximum allowable wind 2.0 metres per second.
The World Championships bronze medallist got off to a great start and never let up, powering his way to the line after the race was held up by a false start from Michael Rodgers that saw the American pre-race favourite being disqualified.
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Nickel Ashmeade was fourth, given the same time 10.10 seconds as young British runner Chijindu Ujah who was given third place behind Trinidad’s Keston Bledman, who ran 10.09 seconds for the runner-up spot.
Commonwealth Games champion O’Dayne Richards was fifth with a best throw of 20.46m as Diamond Race Leader Reese Hoffa won with 21.06m on his fifth and penultimate throw.
The Jamaican who had three fouls in his six attempts was in podium contention, in the top-three after three rounds behind Hoffa and New Zealand’s Tom Walsh before he was passed by Germany’s David Storl (20.77m) and American Joe Kovacs (20.67m).
Roxroy Cato was sixth in the men’s 400m hurdles in 51.00 seconds, hitting the final hurdle and stumbling after getting off to a slow start in the outside lane.
Diamond race leader Michael Tinsley of the USA won with 49.60 seconds, beating Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson (49.84 seconds) and Trinidad and Tobago’s World Champion Jehue Gordon 50.13m.
Schillonie Calvert was disqualified after earlier finishing sixth in the women’s 200m that was won by American Allison Felix in 22.85 seconds (0.4m/s).
