Jamaica seek better luck after slow start at Youth Olympics
Jamaican athletes at the 2nd IOC Youth Olympics will hope for better luck today when competition continues after getting off to a slow start on yesterday’s first full day in Nanjing, China.
Timothy Wynter finished sixth in his first-round heat of the men’s 100m backstroke and failed to advance, while the men’s beach volleyball team lost 2-0 to Brazil.
Today, Sidrell Williams will start his campaign in the swimming pool when he takes part in the first round of the men’s 100m butterfly event, and the beach volleyball team of Rojay Hutchinson and Shavar Bryan will try again for a win when they face Congo.
Fencer Tia Simms-Lymn will make her first appearance.
Wynter bowed out of the men’s 100m backstroke after clocking in 59.21 seconds to finish sixth in his heat, more than two-and-a-half seconds behind winner Javier Acevedo of Canada, who won in 56.77 seconds.
The beach volleyballers went down 2-0 (21-8, 21-12) to Brazil but will hope for better luck against Congo today.
Congo were also first-round losers, beaten 2-0 by New Zealand.
Simms-Lymn will take part in the women’s epee individual event today.
