Four-horse spill sends two jockeys to hospital
JOCKEY Oniel Mullings and apprentice O’Brien White were both taken to hospital by Caymanas Park emergency personnel for treatment after a four-horse spill during the running of yesterday’s last race.
The other jockeys involved in the spill — Aaron Chatrie and Delroy Beharie — were sent home after receiving treatment from doctors assigned to the racetrack.
An official of the promoting company Caymanas Track Limited (CTL), who spoke with the Jamaica Observer, said that based on the preliminary report of the doctor on duty, Mullings seems to be the worst of the lot complaining of pains in his right leg, a leg which he had broken before, and what he termed uncomfortable back pain.
“Mullings was quickly examined and sent away to the hospital for further treatment, while the young White was severely shaken by the fall and was complaining of pain all over his body. He does not at this time appear to have a significant injury from the fall, while Chatrie and Beharie (are) okay,” the CTL official said.
Before the last-race mishap, it was Dick ‘Wily Coyote’ Cardenas day riding four winners to propel the Panamanian-born jockey ahead in the jockeys’ championship where he leads reigning champion Dane Nelson by three wins.
Cardenas’ winners were Chalice Pipe and Striking Distance, both trained by Wayne DaCosta; Sachin for trainer Joseph Thomas and Crucial Appeal in the nightcap from the barn of Patrick Lynch.
Despite his haul of four winners, Cardenas must have felt a wee unlucky as after guiding the Lynch- trained Hologram Shadow to a fighting win, the stewards of the race meeting after viewing video footage of the race and hearing an objection from second past the post Sadiki Blake on Amicable, reversed the placings, disqualifying Hologram Shadow and awarding the race to Amicable.
The emerging talent of three-year-old filly Bubbling Angeline found true expression in the day’s feature, the inaugural running of the St Cecelia Cup. As if paying respect to the former ‘Horse of the Year’ and sprint queen Saint Cecelia, Bubbling Angeline spread-eagled a field of nine at the Open Allowance level winning by six-and-a-half lengths from Fantabulous and El Poderoso in another front-running display of class.
There was simply no catching the Hamark Farms-owned chestnut filly by Blue Pepsi Lodge-Miss Angeline, who won in a relatively fast clocking of 1:18.1 minutes.
