Lewis back with a bang
Thirteen-year-old national senior table tennis champion Dadrian Lewis, fresh from representing Jamaica at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, continued her good form by winning two titles at the just concluded fourth staging of the Angels’ Table Tennis Academy Junior Tournament at the GC Foster College last Saturday.
Using her steady defensive approach for success, Lewis first defeated Brittany Murray of Portland 3-2 in the girls’ Under-15 category before returning to take out the Portlander for the second time, in straight sets to cop the girls’ Under-18 title 3-0.
In the boys’ Under-15 section, Kweisi Willoughby created a mild upset by disposing of national Under-15 champion Sadiki Hines 3-0 to take the event, while Rajani Brown scored a similar victory against Brian McGrowder in the boys’ Under-18 after taking the first set at 12-10.
However, amongst the biggest upset at the tournament came in the boys’ Under-21 final where Mark Phillips hammered out an unlikely 3-2 victory over Ryan Peters, the national Under-21 champion.
The hard-hitting Peters took the first set at 11-7 but for the next two sets struggled to stay alive going under at 5 and 5. He sprang to life in the fourth set and won again at 11-7, but there endeth the struggle as he meekly surrendered the title in the fifth at 8.
Also recording double victories at the tournament was the diminutive eight-year-old Kelsey Davidson. Never afraid to strike the ball with telling accuracy when the opportunity presented itself, Davidson won the girls’ Under-9 and Under-11 titles by up-ending Liana Campbell in both finals.
In the Under-9 section Davidson outlasted Campbell 3-2, then returned to clip her rival 3-1 in the Under-11 category.
In the boys’ Under-9 Joel Butler turned back Andre Richards 3-0, while Omarian Hyde needed four sets to dispose of Cezare McGhie 3-1.
In the girls’ Under-13 final, Sheryl Green outlasted Tianne Esson at 9, 7 and 7, while the talented Aleesio Tulloch steamrolled Jahvel Smith at 8, 2 and 5 to clinch the Under-13 boys’ category.
