Brathwaite aims to conquer spin attack after Bajan milestone
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — West Indies cricketer Kraigg Brathwaite says he is hard at work seeking to improve his ability to conquer spin bowling after achieving a batting milestone in Barbados.
The 22-year-old Barbadian batsman says his current work ethic forms part of his plans to cement his spot on the regional side.
Some West Indies cricketers have often faced criticism for their batting performances against the spinners.
“I know I will never be perfect, but I am still working very hard,” declared Brathwaite in an interview with Barbados Today.
“I have been doing a lot of work against the spinners trying to play them as best as I can. I am trying to be more confident. Also my defence is quite good now.”
Brathwaite recently became the first player to score six hundreds in the Barbados Cricket Association’s Sagicor Cup 50-Over Tournament.
He went past the five each scored by former Spartan, Barbados and West Indies opener Philo Wallace, the Windward Islands and University of the West Indies’ Romel Currency, and Barbados and West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith.
“It’s from way back but I am still very proud,” said Brathwaite.
“I am still very young and still have a lot of runs to score, so I am not really focusing on the records or anything like that”.
Brathwaite said his game as well as his confidence has improved as a result of working and training with one of his role models, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the veteran West Indies middle order batsman.
He scored his debut Test century during the recent series between West Indies and New Zealand.
“The work has now begun. As a player I still have a lot of work to do. It was a great learning experience for me and I am happy that I did well, now I am just looking to improve,” he said.
“It’s just one series. I now have to prove myself some more. I am looking to be consistent, and score lots more runs, that is key.”
