US drones strike jihadist target in northern Iraq
WASHINGTON, United States (AFP) — The US air campaign in Iraq against jihadist militants from the so-called Islamic State continued yesterday with a drone strike on an armed truck west of the Yazidi town of Sinjar, the military said.
US Central Command, which oversees operations in the Middle East, said the vehicle was close to an Islamic State checkpoint and that all US aircraft had left the area safely after it was destroyed.
American forces have been in action over northern Iraq since Friday last week, when they launched a campaign to halt an Islamist offensive against the Yazidi minority and the Kurdish city of Arbil.
