A day in the sun for exercise riders
THEY are at the racetrack every morning exercising horses and simply doing the rounds. Every now and again, these valuable assets of racing are allowed to show their skills in specially designed races, usually at the $180,000 claiming bracket. Such was the case on Saturday when the exercise riders were given two races by the promoting company, Caymanas Track Limited.
Both races were run over 800 metres (four furlongs) with the first going in unusual style to Grand Marque ridden by Odeen Edwards and trained by Andrew McDonald. From the start Edwards had problems as he lost the use of his stirrups and had to guide his mount without the proper use of his feet. He never gave up despite the persistent challenge of Oakrun, in the end winning by three and a half lengths.
“It didn’t make sense to search for the irons as the race was short, so I decided to just ride as best as I could and in the end I won. Of course, I am very happy,” Edwards said.
The second race for the exercise riders went to Kemoy Parchment on I’m A Believer for trainer Paul Hylton. Parchment did not encounter the problems Edwards had in his race, as I’m A Believer galloped resolutely in front and won handily.
“I was in the Jockey’s School already but weight problems forced me out. I want to try again and I know that I have to control my weight. It is always good to ride in these races and to win is a special feeling,” Edwards said.
