Sporting, Humble Lion to feature at Unity Cup
TOLL GATE, Clarendon — The all-Premier League clash between parish rivals Sporting Central Academy and Humble Lion will highlight the eighth edition of the Allien Whittaker Unity Cup, which is set for today at Juici Patties Park in Clarendon Park.
Both sides will be using the game, set for a 4:00 pm kick-off, to gauge their preparation for the upcoming Red Stripe Premier League season.
The winner of the tie will receive the Ronald Manley Memorial trophy.
“I think this is the game that most people will want to see,” noted Allien Whittaker, the event organiser. “Whenever these teams meet, whether in the league or the knockout, it is always a grudge match.”
Meanwhile, Manning Cup outfit Waterford High will open this year’s festival when they battle daCosta Cup team Denbigh High for the Jackie Walters Respect Shield at 10:00 am.
At noon, Lennon High and Kemps Hill will play for the John Green trophy, before Clarendon College and Munro College battle for the Allien Whittaker Unity Cup at 2:00 pm.
Munro (seven) and Clarendon (six) have won 13 daCosta Cup titles between them, but neither has tasted success in decades — Munro not since 1964, while Clarendon won their last title in 1998.
Both sides are, however, eyeing a rival having taken steps to revamp their programmes in the last two seasons.
“This is another game that should be worth seeing,” added Whittaker, a former Clarendon College goalkeeper, “because, in some ways, both teams will be renewing rivalry. In 2000, Munro beat us in the semi-final at Woodside, and they also knocked us out at the Inter-Zone round last season.”
