Independence in the old capital
THE Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s concert and street dance in Spanish Town on Independence Day was a massive affair, featuring entertainers from the old capital.
The event was held in conjunction with the St Catherine Parish Council. It was staged at Burke Road where a large crowd revelled until early Thursday morning.
It ended a week of activities marking the Emancipation from slavery and Jamaica’s 52nd anniversary as a sovereign country.
A number of aspiring artistes from the historic township performed, with the most impressive being Digicel Rising Star contender Puani, Ras Thundarus and Teacha. Portmore singjay Relexx and his seven-year-old sidekick, Little Ice, were also a hit with the crowd.
Ras Thundarus earned the biggest crowd response for the songs Man Fi Dress Like Man and Inna mi Heart. Teacha’s Tribute to Selassie I went over well while Puani held her own with Beyoncé’s One Plus One.
Nature, Wowchi, Chuck Fender, One Third and Oceano stood out with abbreviated sets in the Startime segment.
