Wesley Brown on fire in US
JAMAICA’S rising professional golfing ace Wesley Brown is on fire in the United States of America (USA).
Just a week after securing his first win on the National Golfing Association (NGA) North Carolina series, Brown snatched second place by turning in a 9 under par scorecard for 207 in the three-day Palmetto Open Tournament on Wednesday.
Winning the event was Florida native Brian Richey, who carded 14 under par for a five-stroke win. Brown was one stroke ahead of American Dalton Ward, who shot 8 under par.
Brown started the week with a 71 on the opening day as he failed to light up the course. However, on day two he clawed his way back into contention, shooting a 66 to record the lowest round of the entire tournament. Richey proved rock solid, firing off two rounds of 67 to remain three strokes ahead going into the final day.
The Jamaican ace made a run at Richey but double- bogeyed the final hole, shooting a 70, while the overnight leader continued his excellent form with a final round 68.
Last week Brown won his first overseas tournament in dramatic fashion, coming back from four strokes down on the final day to straddle the field at the Aberdeen Golf Club North Carolina Summer series.
The Sandals Golf and Country Club employee was elated after his showing in the Palmetto Open, noting that this hard work was paying off thanks to his new-found consistency.
“I have a game plan going into his tournament and am happy with my form,” said Brown, who is being sponsored on the tour by Sandals Resorts International. “The NGA has excellent golfers, and to finish in the top two for consecutive tournaments is a great achievement.
“I have been dreaming of one day playing on the PGA circuit against the best in the world and am feeling much more confident that I will be able to achieve that goal,” the local star said.
Brown now heads to Boston for a special golf club fitting before returning to the island for a well-earned break. However, he plans to use the time at home to sharpen up his game before heading back on the pro circuit.
