Jamaica second in Ramon Baez competition at CAGC
AFTER three days of intense competition, Team Jamaica is currently in fourth position for the overall Arthur Ziadie trophy at the 58th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship (CAGC) hosted this year by the Puerto Rico Golf Association at Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico.
The CAGC is an annual championship contested by the nine members — Barbados, the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and the US Virgin Islands.
Team Jamaica is comprised of 14 players competing for five trophies, in addition to the overall trophy. The national representatives this year are Hoerman Cup — Ian Facey, William Knibbs, Bryan Bailey, Geoffrey Chong, Jonathan Newnham; The George Teale trophy — Rochelle Prince, Tiana Cruz, Kei Harris; The Ramon Baez trophy — Sean Morris and Keith Stein; The Francis and Steele-Perkins trophy — Rory Jardine and Radcliffe Knibbs, and the Higgs and Higgs Trophy — Easton Williams and Opeton Marshall. The championship is played over four days and having starting on Tuesday, will end today.
Hoerman Cup Trophy
The best four out of five scores per day counts towards the team’s total. The Jamaican Hoerman cuppers retained Wednesday’s fourth place standing with the day’s lowest rounds shot by rookie, Geoffrey Chong (78). Jonathan Newnham (80) and Ian Facey (82) managed to score in the low eighties. Jamaica now lies 11 shots behind the Trinidad & Tobago team, which is in third position.
George Teale Trophy
In the championship ladies division, three women compete, with the best two scores of the day counting towards the team total. The team is currently in fifth position. Tiana Cruz and Kei Harris, both rookies to the senior team, are both 14 years old and two of the youngest in their competition. Cruz and Harris are displaying maturity beyond their years and remarkable talent, with Tiana shooting the lowest team score of 80. (Tiana finished second in the 14 to 15 girls division in the Caribbean Junior championship held the previous week).
Ramon Baez Trophy
This trophy is one of the three men’s divisions where the lower-hole scores of the two players count towards the total. Sean Morris and Keith Stein are competing in this segment that includes men over 35 years. They have regained their first-day hold on the second-place position with a total of 210, six strokes behind the leaders, Dominican Republic and two shots ahead of the Bahamian team.
Francis and Steele-Perkins Trophy
Rory Jardine and Radcliff Knibbs are the two over-50 competitors in this category and are currently in fifth place with three-day rounds of 77, 75, 78.
Higgs and Higgs Trophy
Opeton Marshall and Easton Williams, competitors in the men’s 60 and over event, produced a stellar round of 69, three under par for a total of 216. They are currently in fourth position, one stroke behind Trinidad & Tobago. Puerto Rico and Barbados are ahead with 208 and 213.
The Championships are being held for the first time on two courses simultaneously, with the Hoerman Cup and George Teale trophy competitions being held on the East course at Dorado Beach and the Raman Baez, Francis and Steele-Perkins, along with the Higgs and Higgs divisions being played at the Sugarcane Course at Dorado Beach as well.
