We want nothing less than a podium finish, say Girls
SUNSHINE Girls Vangelee Williams and Jhaniele Fowler-Reid have declared that the team is going to the Commonwealth Games with one thing in their minds, and that is to be on the podium when the championship is over.
Williams, who hails from Manchester, believes that her team has a good chance of finishing among the top three at the Commonwealth Games.
“The feeling in the camp right now is very good; we are working closely together as a unit and so we are upbeat going into the Championship as our main goal is to finish among the top three, but we are aiming to reach the final,” the 22-year-old Williams told the Jamaica Observer after their final training session, held at the National Arena on Monday evening.
The Sunshine Girls, who are ranked at number four in the world, and will open their quest for a medal against St Lucia, and Williams said that they expect nothing but a win.
“Our first game will be against St Lucia and we are not underestimating anyone or anything because the ball is round and anything can happen, but we are well pumped up and we are going into this game to win.
“And to reach the final as we are aiming to do, we are going to play every game as if it is our last game. We have some experienced players in the squad and I believe that we will reach far,” said Williams.
Meanwhile, goal-attack Fowler-Reid, who stands at six feet five inches, said that once the team stays focused it can get the job done.
“Right now we are very happy… everybody is connecting well and if we stay focused and go out there and do what we know and we were taught in training, I think that we will do very well at the Games,” she said.
Fowler-Reid knows well that success will only come with hard work.
“To finish among the top three and even be in the final, we know that it will take a lot of hard work and determination, but we are willing to do that.
“We are capable of doing the extraordinary; we are a fighting team and we are willing to go the extra mile because we know what it takes to be on top. With the help from our managing team and God, I believe that we will go far,” she said.
