World record holder Maurice Allen for Johnnie Walker Charity Golf Tourney
TOP-RANKED United States golfer Maurice Allen will lead the charge as Diageo Red Stripe will host its inaugural staging of the Johnnie Walker Learning for Life Golf Classic at the Tryall Golf Club in Montego Bay on July 18-20.
Allen, 32, is a professional long drive golfer and Guinness World Record Holder and Red Stripe’s senior communications manager Levaughn Flynn said the company is excited to have Allen as a guest for the tournament.
“His talent and skill in the sport is a great complement to the purpose of the golf classic, which is to raise awareness and funds for Learning For Life, so we can continue transforming lives through education,” said Flynn.
“While here Maurice will be exhibiting his signature powerhouse long drive and giving tutorials. Competitors can also purchase a long drive and have Maurice make the play for them, which otherwise might be a difficult shot,” noted Flynn.
“The funds will go directly to Learning For Life,” he added. Allen copped several titles in 2011, including the Texas Shootout, Heartland Classic, Fall City Classic, Soderby Invitational, Shanks Shootout, and the Aldila World Match Play Championships.
He was named the 2012 captain for the USA long drive team for the international long drive challenge, the 2012 Guinness World Record Ball Speed and in 2013 was named the Boys and Girls Club of America Ambassador of Golf. In 2013, Allen captured the Spanish LDET (Long Driver European Tour) title and the Dixie Classic title.
Since year, he won the T7 Shark Attack Golf Classic, the Bluff City Shootout and the Conforming Club Cold Shootout cups. Johnnie Walker has had a long and storied history with golf, primarily because Johnnie Walker is popular among golfers and golf aficionados and fans.
This event is being held to raise funds for the Diageo Red Stripe Learning for Life programme. Golfers who participate in the 2014 Johnnie Walker tournament at Tryall will be eligible to win an all-expense-paid trip to the Ryder Cup.
The Ryder Cup is held at Gleneagles in Scotland and is a European Tour golf tournament. The Johnnie Walker World Golf Championship was held at the Tryall Golf Club in Jamaica from 1991 to 1995. The tournament was intended to be an official World Championship event to rival the four majors, but was terminated after just five stagings.
Winners included Fred Couples (1991, 1995); Nick Faldo (1992); Larry Mize (1993); Ernie Els (1994). Globally, there is the Johnnie Walker Classic played in the Asia Pacific region and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in Scotland.
The Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles is a European Tour golf tournament which is played at the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.
The tournament was founded in 1999 as the Scottish PGA Championship, and despite maintaining the same sponsor, has since changed name on several occasions, as Diageo has looked to promote different brands.
It is currently contested over the PGA Centenary Course, formerly called the Monarch’s Course, venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup matches. Gleneagles, a five-star luxury hotel owned by Diageo and home to one of the world’s best golf courses, will host the world-famous and prestigious 2014 Ryder Cup.
