Clare, Henry highlight day 2 of JTTA National Champs
SHENIQUE Clare and Michael Henry highlighted day two of the Jamaica Table Tennis Association (JTTA) National Championships, as they came up with spirited performances to claim the Mixed Doubles title at GC Foster College on Friday.
The number-two ranked team of Henry and his Petcom-sponsored teammate Clare had to come from behind to dethrone the number one-ranked team of Alphanso Morris and Andrea Wadsworth 3-2 in five sets. Morris and Wadsworth easily won the first set 11-9 and went down 9-11 in the second set, and 8-11 in the third.
However, Henry and Clare then produced some high-quality shots which saw them taking the last two sets 11-4, 11-9. “It was a good win for us, we know it wasn’t going to be a walkover… they are a good team and they played very well. Michael and I knew what we had to do, we discussed our game plan and remained focused and so we came out victorious,” Clare told the Jamaica Observer.
The number two-ranked team of Simon Tomlinson and Kareem Flowers turned the tables on the number oneranked Kane Watson and Dale Parham with a straight three-set win to capture the Men’s Doubles title.
The dominant Tomlinson and Flowers were relentless in victory taking the sets 11- 3, 11-8 and 15-13. Dadrian Lewis, who is the youngest member of the Commonwealth Games team, joined forces with Larissa McLaughlin to cop the girls’ Under-18 doubles title with a 3-2 set win over the pair of Doneika Lawrence and Davia Green.
They lost the first and third sets 9-11, but won the second, fourth and fifth sets, 11-7, 11-9 and 11-4. Kweisi Willoughby and Tyreek Thompson took the boys’ equivalent in similar fashion over the number-two pair of Marcell Holness and Rojni Brown.
They won the five-set game 11-8, 11-9 and 11-5. The team of Christopher Marsh, Simon Tomlinson, Kane Watson and Dale Parham along with females Shenique Clare, Yvonne Foster, Kaydian Carney and Dadrian Lewis, are using the championships as preparation before departing to the 20th staging of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
