How often do we see this happening? A change of equipment doing the trick. Such was the case again when the Joseph Thomas-trained Concur released the maiden with a change of equipment on Wednesday. When Concur (War Marshall-Slim Thing) returned without the figure-eight, it was quite different story going over 1,000 metres round. Ridden by Ruja Lahoe, Concur won handily by one-and-a-quarter lengths over Grand Train (Richard Mitchell) in a time of 1:03:2 minutes. Again we see the importance of role getting the right equipment, sometimes it is the difference between winning and losing.

MULLINGS, MCDONALD COMBINE FOR FIRST SEASON WIN

Moi Lei finally released her maiden tag giving trainer Andrew McDonald and jockey Oneil McDonald their first winner for the 2014 season. Moi Lei, after 26 tries finally got to the winning post in front but only after withstanding a late challenge from Easy Stepping (Davidan Robinson) and Tiz A Cat (Ryan Nelson). The win by Moi Lei must have brought relief to McDonald as Moi Lei was his 52nd start for the year. For Mullings it was his 23rd ride. Sent off at odds of 2-1 in a field of 11 runners the four-year-old chestnut mare by Tracking – Starathercommand covered the 1,200-metre event in a very slow 1:20:1 minutes. Congrats to McDonald and Mullings on their victory and continue to work hard because that is the only way the winners will come.

DOUBLE FOR CARDENAS AND DACOSTA

The combination of jockey Dick Cardenas and trainer Wayne DaCosta gave a gentle reminder of their prowess scoring a working double on Wednesday. The duo’s winners were Street Dancer (Seeking The Glory – Luvable), who got home in a Restricted Stakes event over 1,100 metres, beating Bars Of Gold (Percy Williams) by just under two lengths in 1:07:4 minutes and the five-year-old grey mare Exotic Gold (He’stherealthing – Formally Gold), who was an easy winner among Open Allowance company over 1,700 metres. Exotic Gold got the better of Eastwood (Percy Williams) in 1:46:4 minutes. In the case of Exotic Gold, Cardenas and DaCosta must have pleased with her effort as she was winning her second race in a row.

SADIKI BLAKE QUIETLY BRINGING HOME THE WINNERS

He doesn’t get a lot of rides but Sadiki Blake, especially these days, is making good use of them. This season he has ridden five winners form 54 mounts, this after finding it difficult in the early part of his career to locate the winning post. Now he is looking better in the saddle and his riding with a lot more confidence. Blake’s latest winner came on Wednesday when he steered the Ray Phillips-trained Our Creation to victory.
