Keep your kids safe this summer
SUMMER is the warmest season in the year and children must be cautious while enjoying themselves.
Going to the pool and beach are two of the most fun activities to keep cool during the season. Children should have adult supervision at all times, whether in or outside of the water. Life jackets and flotation devices should be used. It is also paramount that they adhere to certain rules, such as no running by the pool and no diving, and to swim in designated areas, especially with lifeguards.
Formal swimming lessons would be great for young children who cannot swim. However, a responsible adult should always be present.
To prevent heat-related illnesses, it is important to beat the heat. So, aim to stay cool by dressing in lightweight clothing and take cool baths and showers. It is essential to keep hydrated. Do not wait to feel thirsty and drink more water than usual. Look out for symptoms such as weakness, heavy sweating, nausea, vomiting, and fainting.
For those who are going camping, carry your mosquito nets, store foods in tightly sealed containers, wash hands often, and physical activities should be done in a completely harmless environment.
Also, be proactive. Try to prevent injuries including falls, head injury and broken bones.
Look at the playground area and equipment to see if it is safe and well-maintained. Protective gear, for example helmets, are vital for activities such as cycling. Responsible and attentive adults should always be present in fallprone areas.
Have fun this summer and remember to keep healthy and safe.
