Top seeds enter quarters at Sagicor All Jamaica Junior Tennis Champs
THE top four male juniors in the island will spring into action today at the Sagicor All Jamaica Junior Tennis Championships at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre.
The tournament began on Thursday with games being contested in boys’ and girls’ Under-18, 16, 14, 12 and 10.
In boys’ Under-18 action Brandon Tom got by Gregory Spencer 8-5 to set up a showdown with top-seeded male junior Nicholas Malcolm.
Cliff Dwyer will face off with second seed Jason Lawson after defeating Shane Phillips 8-7 in a thrilling contest. Daniel Hill, the island’s third-seeded male junior will face Roshane Allen after Allen easily got by Bradley Nembhard in yesterday’s action.
The other quarter-final game will see Kyle Martin challenging the number four seed in Dimitri Bird, Martin was given a bye into the quarter-final round. The four top seeds were automatically entered in the quarter-finals.
In the girls’ Under-18 section, Leah Smyle earned the right to play top seed Tradiann Barrett after beating Maya Ricketts 8-6. Selena Blythe registered an easy 8-1 win to set up an encounter with second seed Llana Blackwood. Rameka McIntosh and Sheeda Nickle advanced to face the third and fourth seeded females in Alex Marzouca and Franchesca Chin, respectively. Again the top four seeds received byes into the quarter-final round.
The boys’ Under-16 top seed Kyle Martin advanced with an 8-0 win over Romario Boddall with Cliff Dwyer, the number three seed advancing thanks to an 8-1 win over Shaun Morrison. Number two
seed Daniel Hill also easily advanced with an 8-0 win over Bruce Rickards.
Girls’ Under-16 action saw the first upset of the tournament with top seed Michaela Stephens being undone by Llana Blackwood 8-0.
The competition continues today with the quarter-finals scheduled to start at 9:00 am.
