A number of overseas-based players have expressed an interest in representing the senior Reggae Girlz, says head coach Merron Gordon.

The Jamaicans are currently preparing for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Cup set for Trinidad & Tobago from August 19-26, after easing through the recent qualifiers with resounding wins over St Lucia and hosts Dominican Republic.

Several foreign-based players formed a part of that set-up.

“Since that campaign in the Dominican Republic, I’ve received about seven calls from players, from as far as England, wanting to represent the country. Players should be coming (to Jamaica) on trials within the next month,” Gordon said.

Both Gordon and his last-minute appointed assistant Wendell Downswell have called for the need for reinforcements, despite the lop-sided victories in the Spanish-speaking country.

A number of the local-based players are in practice and are set to undergo regular strength work in the gym. The senior Girlz team is also likely to have a pre-tournament camp on overseas soil to mirror the two-week preparation training held in Miami, Florida, just ahead of the delegation’s departure to the Dominican Republic.

The overseas camp was made possible through funding organised by the Jamaica Football Federation global ambassador, Cedella Marley.

Gordon is hoping for even more support ahead of the CFU Cup in Trinidad & Tobago.

“I want to ‘big up’ Cedella Marley. I cannot say enough about the help the programme has received from Cedella Marley and I just hope that other entities come on board and help these girls. It takes cash to care and as long as the programme has cash, with these girls, the sky is the limit.”

If Jamaica finish in the top three at the CFU Women’s Finals, they will compete in the CONCACAF Championships set for the United States late in the year. That will allow for qualification to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, to be held in Canada.
