Progressive clip St George’s 4-3 to claim Portland U-20 title
PROGRESSIVE Football Club led by a brace from Theodore Dunkley edged St George’s 4-3 in an exciting final to capture the Portland Football Association (PFA)/Portland Credit Union Under-20 title at Boundbrook Pavilion last Friday.
Progressive were on the score sheet early in the 10th minute, when Emile Byfield and Joel Greene- Burke combined to set up St Aubyn Tracey, who tapped past the St George’s goalkeeper Zandy Walker.
Their celebration was short-lived, however, as Kevon Gray levelled the game a minute later.
The game was evenly poised from there on as both teams launched a series of attacks, but St George’s made it 2-1 in the 32nd minute, when Kevon Gray was taken down by Kevaughn Smith inside the penalty area and Cecil Bell stepped up and easily converted.
Progressive were back on level terms in the 40th minute, when Tracey’s cross picked out Dunkley, who tapped into an open goal as Walker going for the ball found himself in no-man’s-land. Cordel Kennedy fired one home four minutes later to give St George’s a 3-2 lead at half-time.
The second half began as the first with both goalkeepers being called upon as the teams came out attacking, but Progressive were the team which reaped success to level the game at 3-3 when Dunkley fired home his second from close range in the 86th minute.
The scoreline remained the same at the end of regulation time and so it was on to extra time to decide a winner. Progressive got the clincher in the 100th minute when Joel Greene- Burke fired home from a rebound off Walker to spark celebrations in the camp as they held on for the win.
