Zaneta Alvaranga of St Hugh’s Preparatory highlighted day one of the two-day Nestle Preparatory & Primary schools championships by setting three new records to lead the qualifiers at the National Aquatics Centre yesterday.

Alvaranga gave those in attendance a glimpse of what is to come in today’s finals of the meet which is dubbed as the mother of all Primary/Prep schools swim rally, as it is the final meet of the academic year.

The eight-year-old first made her mark in event number seven, the girls’ 50-metre backstroke, where she swam a remarkable 39.95 seconds to annihilate the nine-year-old record of 41.92 seconds set by Stefani Webley in 2009. Gabrielle Jones (46.27secs) of Immaculate Conception Prep and Safiya Officer (46.38secs) of Emmanuel Christian Academy was second and third, respectively.

Daniel Mair of St Hugh’s Prep topped the boys’ equivalent in a time of 43.44 seconds, ahead of teammate Joshua Mair (46.15secs), with Joshua Mignott (48.04secs) of Porter’s Centre for Knowledge claiming third spot.

Brianna Anderson of Stella Maris Prep topped the girls’ 9-10 event in 37.97 seconds, with teammates Emily MacDonald (41.32secs) and Jaden Morales (42.08secs) finishing second and third, respectively.

Kyle Sinclair of Ardenne Prep won the boys’ event in 38.39 seconds, getting the better of Jean Paul Campbell (41.11secs) of Stella Maris Prep and Kyle Lyew (43.24secs) of StS Peter & Paul Prep.

The girls’ 11-12 event was topped by Paris Clare of Excelsior Primary in 40.14 seconds ahead of Kelsey Beckford (42.34secs) of Immaculate Conception Prep, and Lauriel Richards (43.19secs) of Pembroke Hall Primary. Daniel McKenzie (40.54secs) of Emmanuel Christian Academy took the boys’ side, beating Dante Douett (42.74secs) of Excelsior Primary and Jevaun Jackson (44.07secs) of St Hugh’s Prep.

Alvaranga got her second milestone in event number 15, the 50-metre freestyle, which she effortlessly won in a fast time of 33.25 seconds to chop down the 10-year-old mark of 34.12 seconds set in 2004 by Raynae Hall. Officer (37.03secs) claimed second spot, while Fearon (39.43secs) was third.

Emma Marston (42.75secs) of Hopefield Prep leads the Section B qualifiers in the event, ahead of Jada Campbell (42.97secs) of Hillel Prep and Foo (43.04secs).

Alexander Taylor of Sts Peter & Paul Prep topped the boys’ equivalent in 36.25 seconds, getting the better of Daniel Mair (38.51secs) and Nyles Davis (38.62secs) of Wolmer’s Prep.

The young sensation, who has an astonishing form, returned in the evening session to blow away her competitors and another nine-year-old record, this time in the 50-metre butterfly, where she stopped the clock at 38.41 seconds to topple Breanna Roman’s 2005 record of 39.76 seconds.
