UWI Staff dominates day 3 of Supreme Ventures Business House Volleyball League
THE UWI Pelicans Staff team starred in their own gymnasium on last Sunday’s Day Three of the Supreme Ventures Business House Volleyball League, after posting four wins on the day.
UWI registered a win each in the men’s and mixed categories and two wins in the women’s category on their way to cementing their status as title contenders in all three categories.
The day’s first encounter was an excellent advert for the game of volleyball as Sagicor women provided strong opposition to the defending champions and favourites, UWI in a three-set thriller. The experience of the UWI Staff came to the fore, however, as Sagicor were narrowly defeated 21-20, 12-21, 21-20. The UWI returned to face JDF’s Marching Women and as they did against Sagicor, the UWI Staff came up with the goods when it mattered most. JDF put up a tremendous fight but could not stop UWI from going on to win 2-1 — 21-14, 20-21, 21-20.
In other women’s category matches it was the BOJ Gators who came out the other big winners on the day, registering three straight 2-1 victories. They got past the JDF 21-13, 15-21, 21-19, before rallying from a set down to beat Sagicor 19-21, 21-18, 21-15. They then handed UWI their only defeat of the day, again coming from a first set deficit of 15-21, to win the next two 21-18, 21-15 for a two sets to one victory to end the day unbeaten.
The UWI then returned to winning ways in the mixed section, as they outplayed the Wolmer’s Girls Staff in the battle of educational institutions, to come away with a comfortable 2-0 win — 21-11, 21-11. It was a similar story in the men’s category when UWI came up against the AMECO Fixers. Again, the UWI’s dominance and experience proved too much as AMECO were defeated 21-12, 21-9 for an easy 2-0 victory.
In other games on the day, NWC defeated the JUTC in straight sets, 21-17, 21-13 in mixed-category action. AMECO also registered a win in the category, getting by Guardian Life 2-0 with final set scores of 21-8, 21-4.
Guardian Life were then awarded a two-set to nil victory as JCDC failed to show for their mixed-category match.
In the men’s category it was Sagicor who registered their only win on the day, getting the better of JUTC 2-0 with set scores of 21-16 and 21-19.
The Supreme Ventures Business House Volleyball League action will continue this Sunday with a full slate of games being contested at the UWI Gymnasium.
