Belgium rally to beat Algeria 2-1
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Substitute Marouane Fellaini ended Belgium’s frustration in the 70th minute when he scored a header from a cross to put his team level 1-1 in their Group H match against Algeria Tuesday.
Belgium one of the favoured teams in the 2014 World Cup found the going not much to their liking early on.
Algeria went one up from the penalty spot in the 24th minute.
But Belgium, while having the greater ball possession, found it difficult to break down the Algerian’s defence for an equaliser. The half ended 1-0.
The Europeans on the resumption kept pressuring to draw level as the faces of fans in the stands drooped in disbelief.
With 20 minutes left in the game their fortune changed. Fellaini hit in his header and ten minutes later Dries Mertens converted from a quick Belgium counter to go 2-1 over the spirited Africans.
