Promoters take Contender semifinals to downtown coliseum
For the first time the Wray & Nephew Contender will move to Downtown Kingston for the highly anticipated semi-final rounds.
The two semi-finals will be held at the ‘Wray & Nephew Contender Coliseum’, which will be located between Port Royal Street and Water Lane beside the Urban Transport Centre.
The first semi-final, which will take place on June 18, will see Tsetsi ‘Lights Out’ Davis taking on Howard Eastman from Guyana, while the second semi-final on June 25 will feature Sakima Mullings against Donovan ‘Police’ Campbell.
Speaking on this exciting new announcement, Cecil Smith, Group brand manager for Rums at J Wray & Nephew Limited, said: “Since the inception of the Wray & Nephew Contender it has been our goal to revive the sport of boxing in Jamaica. The number of persons who tune in each week to TVJ to watch the Wray & Nephew Contender is proof that Jamaicans are excited about the sport.
“The venue that we have chosen, and which we have named ‘The Wray & Nephew Contender Coliseum’, is a much bigger venue than our regular home at the CBA and will allow more Jamaicans to watch these two highly-anticipated matches live.”
Smith added that for the semi-finals the very popular Wray and Nephew Contender Fan Zone will be extended. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a number of exciting activities and win prizes before the start of the fights. There will also be an official after-party at the venue after the fights.
