Kids participate in cultural competition
ON May 15, Herbert Morrison Technical High School’s Cultural Development Committee staged their first annual inter primary and preparatory school cultural competition under the theme ‘Preserving our culture, safeguarding our future’.
Thirteen schools participated in the competition — Lethe All-Age, Chester Castle All-Age, Sudbury All-Age, Albion Primary and Junior High, Somerton All-Age, Howard Cooke Primary, Corinaldi Avenue Primary, Catherine Hall Primary, St James Preparatory, Starter Academy, Glendevon Primary and Junior High, Reading Preparatory, Kindergarten and High School and Barracks Road Primary.
The students participated in eight areas — Jamaican costume, cultural display, poster making, traditional food preparation, essay writing, poetry writing and performance, song writing and performance and drama.
The competition was held under the patronage of Governor General Achievement awardee Shaurna Miller.
Over 700 students were in attendance. At the end of the competition Barracks Road Primary was declared the winner, Corinaldi Avenue Primary placed second, and Catherine Hall Primary was third. Somerton All-Age and Infant was the top rural school.
All competitors received a certificate of participation and monetary prizes were awarded to the first second and third place entrants in the eight competition areas.
