Chile defeat Australia 3-1
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Chile scored two goals early in the first half and a third in time added on to defeat Australia 3-1 in their Group B match in the World Cup tournament underway in Brazil.
Alex Sanchez opened the score for the South Americans in the 12th minute before teammate Jorge Valdivia added another two minutes later, totally outplaying the Australians.
But the Chileans appeared to take their foot off the throttle and Australia hit back with Tim Cahill scoring a well taken header in the 35th minute to end the first half 2-1.
The score remained the same at the end of regulation time as the gutsy Australians pushed for an equaliser and kept the Chileans at bay.
But Chile’s Jean Beausejour knocked in a third as the final seconds ticked away.
Earlier in Group B, The Netherlands demolished Spain 5-1. Chile will take on defending champions Spain in Group B action on Wednesday.
