THE Braata Folk Singers will mark their fifth anniversary season with a production titled A Likkle Braata Goes A Long Way.

Performances are scheduled for the Jamaica Performing Arts Centre in Queens, and The Kumble Theater at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York, on June 21 and 22, respectively.

Group founder Andrew Clarke said he is also looking at the possibility of doing a series of shows in Jamaica.

“That was where the original inspiration of the Braata Folk Singers came from. The folk singers perform a lot of Miss Lou’s songs,” said the Jamaica-born actor, vocalist and producer, who founded the group in June 2009.

According to Clarke, the group’s mission is to preserve Jamaican and Caribbean folk music culture.

Jamaican folk classics, including Ole Ma’as Charley, Dis Long Time Gyal, Sammy Dead and Yellow Yam, will be done alongside significant works such as Nah Gi Up and Wheel O Matilda.

The songs will be presented against the backdrop of a rural Jamaican village setting and chronicles the trials

and triumphs of its humble residents.

“A Likkle Braata is our love letter of thanks to our incredibly supportive audience, who have been there from day one and who have grown with and supported us through thick and thin. We want to share this pivotal five-year birthday celebration with them, even as we invite them to continue to stay with us for the next five, 10, 15 years to come,”

he said.
