Anchovy Primary cop St JFA/VMBS Under -13 title
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Anchovy Primary rode their luck to a second St James Football Association’s VMBS Under -13 title, beating first- time finalists Somerton Primary 4-3 on penalty kicks at the UDC Field on Tuesday, after the teams played out a 0-0 draw after regulation and extra- time.
Anchovy Primary’s goalkeeper Rajeim Nelson saved kicks from the last two Somerton Primary kickers to help his team win the title, after an improbable run up to the finals.
Anchovy Primary scored one goal in regulation play in their last four games, but were air tight at the other end as they failed to give up any goals over the span. They drew both quarterfinal games 0-0, then advanced to the semi-finals on a coin toss where they edged favourites Chetwood Primary 1-0.
It was the second time the 1999 winners and Somerton Primary were playing to a 0-0 draw, as they also failed to score when they met in their opening Zone C group game on April 4.
In the opening game on Tuesday, Chetwood Primary beat Barracks Road Primary 1-0 in the third place play-offs.
Tuesday’s final was historic as it was the first time two schools outside of the Montego Bay region were meeting in the final.
Both schools failed to score after the regulation 60 minutes and an additional 14 minutes of extra- time.
In the shootout, Jemoy Walters, Devonte Campbell, Christopher Slowley and Jaheim Scarlet scored for Anchovy Primary, while Timoy Williams missed his kick.
Oniel Knott, Courtney Mason and Demarcus Walker all scored for Somerton, while Nelson blocked kicks from Chadane Blagrove and Brandon Walker.
