Tomlinson, Clare top Table Tennis Open Champs
SIMON Tomlinson and Shenique Clare, two of Jamaica’s representatives at the recently-concluded World Table Tennis Championship in Tokyo, Japan, won the Men’s and Women’s Singles titles at the Spring Open Table Tennis Championship at the GC Foster College in St Catherine on Saturday.
Tomlinson, a member of Jamaica’s World Championship winning team of Division Five, along with overseas-based Michael Hyatt, Christopher Marsh and national champion Kaanne Watson, took advantage of the absence of other local-based members of the successful team, to defeat last year’s winner Phillip Drummond in four sets.
It was Tomlinson’s first success in the Spring Open singles and the easily triumphed at the expense of a feeble attempt from Drummond — 11-9, 11-8, 12-10, 11-8. Earlier, Clare did likewise to overpower her Wolmer’s teenage opponent Dierdre Lewis in similar fashion at 11-9,13-11, 11-2, 11-2.
Before that, Lewis dismissed Brittany Murray 3-1 in a competitive game to lift the Under-15 Girls’ title, while the powerfully built Portlander used her fitness to capture the Women’s Open ‘B’ by defeating Cheryl Green after also losing out 3-2 to St Catherine’s energetic Oneida Francis in the Girls Under 21stanza.
Rajni Brown won the ‘C’ Open 4-1 ahead of Darren Chambers, while the real precocious talent at the tournament Ryan Peters took the Boys’ Under-21 title over Mark Miller 4-2. Peters is the winner of a table tennis scholarship from Titchfield High School in Portland to atend the University of The West Indies in the new term.
