Coach names injured Castillo in Ecuador WCup squad
MIAMI GARDENS, Florida (AP) — Ecuador are taking Segundo Castillo to the World Cup despite the midfielder being ruled out for three weeks with a knee injury.
The 32-year-old Castillo was injured in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Mexico, but was confirmed in the 23-man squad on Monday.
Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda says through a translator that “the doctor checked him out yesterday and he confirmed he needs three weeks to recover”.
“But he’ll still be with us. The hope is he will be ready in time,” Rueda said.
Rueda’s side opens their World Cup campaign in Brazil against Switzerland on June 15, play Honduras on June 20 and complete Group E against France on June 25.
Before then, Ecuador play England in a friendly today at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens.
