Barbican, Reno one win away from Premier League promotion
THE return fixtures in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) All-island Confederation Play-offs take centre stage today with a pair of fourth-round matches.
Both Barbican FC and leaders Reno FC will inch closer to securing the two promotion spots if they can pull off respective wins over Jamalco FC and Axum FC.
Kick-off in both encounters is set for 3:30 pm.
Former national champions Reno, who have six points after two wins and a loss, will travel to the St Mary Sports Complex to face cellar team Axum.
The St Mary-based outfit, who have only a point from their three outings, are desperate for points and will also want to avenge the first-round 0-4 loss to Reno at the Frome Sports Complex.
Reno have scored eight goals, while conceding only two, and have the leading goal scorer in the tournament in former national youth standout, Craig Foster, who has found the net five times.
Conversely, Axum have given up eight goals in total, with their defence letting in at least two each game.
At the Barbican Complex, the hosts, who have six points, but trail Reno due to an inferior goal-difference, battle third-placed Jamalco.
Jamalco have four points after a 1-0 home win over Barbican and a 2-2 away draw with Axum. Their only loss came in a 0-3 disappointment against rampant Reno.
After their first-round falter against Jamalco, Barbican have put in strong second-half showings at home to power to come-from-behind 2-1 victories over both Reno and Axum.
Given the confidence within the camp, and their comfort at playing at home, a third straight win for Barbican is very much on the cards.
The top two teams at the end of this home-and-away round-robin competition qualify for top-flight football next season.
