Liguanea United ‘A’ stop Waulgrovians ‘B’ for Intermediate netball title
LIGUANEA United “A” defeated Waulgrovians “B” 42-36 goals to capture the 2014 Netball Jamaica (NJ)/Best Dressed Chicken Intermediate League at the Leila Robinson Courts on Saturday.
This was the final match for the Netball Jamaica 2013-2014 season, and the Sylvester Campbell-coached Liguanea United “A” aggregation did extremely well by finishing the season with a perfect win record.
Coach Campbell was winning his second title of the season, as last month he coached Kingston Humming Birds to victory in the final of the Berger Elite League. Campbell was very elated with his team’s weekend victory and said it was also a very good game between both teams.
“It was really exciting from the outset but Liguanea “A” fared much better than our opponents,” Campbell said. Losing coach Patrick Brissett was disappointed at the manner of the defeat. “There were some rather bad decisions made and there were simply too many turnovers.”
In the first quarter of the final, Waulgrovians “B” got off to a good start with a 4-1 lead before extending it to 6-3. However, Liguanea “A” cut their lead to 6-5 with Waulgrovians “B” going into the first break leading 11-8.
The second quarter produced some exciting plays and accurate passes mainly from the winners as they joined at 15-15 before pulling slightly ahead at the half-time break at 21-19.
A ding-dong tussle ensued in the third quarter with the score locked at 23-23 before Liguanea “B” took over the lead and never looked back as Waulgrovians “B” began to lose their composure.
In the fourth and final quarter, Liguanea “A” made certain the game would not end in a nail-biting finish as they continued to get the better of their opponents.
For Liguanea “A”, goal-attack Rebekah Robinson scored 29 goals from 33 attempts, while for Waulgrovians “B”, Tara Gay scored 24 goals from 28 attempts.
