Organiser happy with Rankine Tennis Tournament
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Organiser of the second annual Rankine Tennis Tournament held at the SeaGarden Beach Resort last weekend described the four-day event as “a big success” and a step in reviving the sport in western Jamaica.
Maureen Rankine, a former Jamaican number one ranked player, said the event was an important part of her plans to make Montego Bay a hotbed for tennis again, as it was back in the 1980s and 1990s when a number of players went on to represent national teams, with some receiving US college scholarships.
Errol Chatoo beat Andre Spence to win the Men’s Open A Singles 10-6 in a pro set, while Errol Wright and Noel Nickle won the Men’s Open Doubles 10-9 over O’Neil Brown and Andrew Baston.
National representative Nicholas Malcolm beat Didier Traile in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to win the Boys Under-21 title; Tariq Simons won the Boys’ Under-14 over Dmitri Traile 6-4, 6-3, while Kenneth Lee won the Boys Under-12 6-1 over Kyle Fraser.
LaDonya Ainsworth lost in two finals — beaten 6-0 by Tradian Barertt in the girls’ Under-18 and 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 to Hydie Lee in the girls’ Under-16 final.
Lee lost in the Under-14 girls’ final to Abigail Peru, 7-5.
