Jamaicans shine at Grand Valley meet
Jamaicans Samantha Elliot and Danielle Williams were double winner son Saturday’s final day of the NCAA Division Two track and field championships held at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan last weekend.
Both athletes, seniors, who represented Johnson C Smith where they are coached by former Kingston College head coach Lennox Graham, joined another Jamaican Salcia Slack who had won the long jump and heptathlon titles earlier in the championships.
Williams, an IAAF World Championships 100m hurdles semi-finalists, just missed out on being a triple gold medallist as she was beaten by teammate Elliott in the sprint hurdles by mere thousands of a second in a nail-bitingly close finish. Both were credited with the same time 13.05 seconds and it took photo finish to separate them. Elliot was timed at 13.044 seconds to Williams’ 13.050 seconds.
Elliot also won the 400m hurdles in 57.12 seconds, while Williams took the 100m/200m double as both ended their collegiate careers on a high.
In all four Jamaicans won individual events as Roxroy Cato, who represented St Augustine’s College, won the men’s 400m hurdles in 49.75 seconds.
Williams clocked 11.55 seconds (-0.6m/s) to win the 100m as another Jamaican Yanique Ellingon of Lincoln, Missouri was third in 11.75 seconds.
Williams returned hours later to win the 200m in 23.48 seconds (-1.1m/s) with Ellington fourth.
Former GC Foster runner Taffawee Johnson was third in the men’s 100m in 10.58 seconds.
Former Vere Technical quarter-miler Kayon Robinson representing Adam State of Colorado finished third in the women’s 400m after entering the event with the favourites tag, running 53.57 seconds to take the bronze. Another Jamaican Tovea Jenkins of Johnson C Smith was fourth after going into the final with the ninth best time.
National Junior Record holder in the men’s pole vault, K’Don Samuels was fourth in his event, clearing 5.30m, the same height as the winner.
