Pembroke Hall capture Minor League crown
PEMBROKE HALL beat Titchfield 26-19 to capture the 2014 Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL)/Netball Jamaica (NJ) Minor League competition title at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday.
It was their first Minor League title after only playing in the competition for a second year. It was also their second win over Titchfield as they had earlier faced each other in the preliminary rounds. Winning coach Kerry Smith explained the reasons behind the team’s success: “It is really, really excited to come back from being banned for six months to become champions.
“This is my first season as coach and I got rid of the ones who misbehaved. We have a bunch of new players in the team and I did not know whether we could have reached so far and be victorious,” Smith said.
The Pembroke Hall coach said his team has played 10 matches and won all 10 and that is a remarkable feat to complete the competition unbeaten.
“The players are so excited with their success.” Losing coach Winston Wilson said it was their first outing in the Netball Jamaica (NJ) clubs league and the girls have played very well.
“The team is made up of schoolgirls from Titchfield High School in Portland, and some will be graduating from school this year.”
Meanwhile, in the Minor League final, the winners trailed 5-6 at the first quarter before getting the better of their opponents to take the lead at half-time 16-9.
Pembroke Hall increased their lead to 21-12 at the third quarter break before going on to win. For the winners, goal shoot Kamala Clarke scored a perfect 28 goals, while for the losers Danea Hall had 13 goals from 15 efforts.
In the third-place play-off Mico ‘A’ defeated Waulgrovians ‘A’ 61-30 in the Major League, while Molynes United ‘C’ won the Minor League third-place play-off 29-20 over Liguanea United ‘B’.
