Pelicans conquer JAMALCO for Major League title
UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans defeated JAMALCO 48-38 and in the process captured the 2014 Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL)/Netball Jamaica Major League title at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC) last Saturday.
Pembroke Hall, meantime, beat Titchfield 26-19 to win the Minor League, their first title after only playing in the competition for a second year. It was also their second win over Titchfield as they had earlier faced each other in the preliminary rounds.
In the main event, for the winning effort Pelicans collected the SVL championship trophy and the first-place prize cash award of $120,000 and medals, while JAMALCO received $100,000 for finishing second.
In the lower league, Pembroke Hall walked away with $85,000 and the champions’ trophy, while Titchfield had to settle for the runnner-up purse of $70,000.
Pelicans, coached by former national tactician Oberon Pitterson-Nattie, added the Major League crown to the Open League title, in a Major League season they went unbeaten.
“It was a very good performance by the players despite starting out a little slow in the first quarter,” said Conrad Parkes, Pelicans assistant coach.
Meanwhile, losing coach Winston Nevers, said: “The girls did their best as JAMALCO wasn’t expected to reach the final after losing 13 of their players to the Elite semi-professional league.”
In the showdown, JAMALCO took a 4-1 lead in the first quarter before their opponents fought back nicely to tie at 5-5. JAMALCO went up again 9-6, but the Pelicans went on to level the scores again 11-11 at the first break.
The game was evenly contested in the second quarter with scores tied on five occasions, until Pelicans began to gain the better of JAMALCO as they went into the half-time break leading 25-19.
Pelicans maintained their lead over JAMALCO by increasing the lead to eight points (30-22) inside the third quarter. The Pelicans at the final break led 38-26.
