Basovak, Black Stars claim group honours in Confed play-offs
HAYES, Clarendon — An all-St Catherine tie will highlight the semi-finals of the South Central Confederation Super Eight Championship after Newlands failed to replicate DB Basovak in topping their preliminary round group.
All the Portmore-based team needed was a point from their top-of-the-table clash with Black Stars — a feat they had achieved in the corresponding first-round fixture. They, however, came up short, beaten 2-0 on Wednesday in New Town, St Elizabeth.
The defeat, their first in the play-offs, means both Newlands and Black Stars finished on 13 points at the top of Zone B, with the latter claiming group honours courtesy of a superior goal difference.
Newlands will now face DB Basovak in one semi-final, set for next Wednesday at the Spanish Town Prison Oval, while Black Stars will face Jamalco in the other tie at the St Elizabeth Technical High School this Sunday.
The Clarendon-based Jamalco placed second in Zone A — two points behind Basovak, who were awarded the points from their game against Newell United, who failed to show — after beating Alligator Pond 4-1 in their return fixture at Wembley in Hayes.
In the day’s other game, Treadlight defeated New Green 5-2 at Brooks Park to finish their campaign on nine points. New Green, champions of this competition two seasons ago, were the only team to end the group stage without a point.
The Mandeville side lost all six games, conceding a competition-high 20 goals, while scoring five times.
Manchester’s Alligator Pond and Newell of St Elizabeth also failed to record a win in their six outings. They, however, fared better than New Green, having earned three and two points, respectively, from drawn games.
The winner of the competition will represent South Central in the JFF National Premier League play-offs, which will be contested by the four Confederation champions.
