Pelicans turn back Waulgrovians ‘A
UWI Pelicans defeated Waulgrovians ‘A’ 46-39 as the 2014 Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL)/Netball Jamaica Major League competition continued at the Leila Robinson Courts last Saturday.
The win for the Oberon Pitterson-coached Pelicans was their seventh from as many games in which they are leaders in Zone One with 21 points. They have qualified for the quarter-finals knockout stage.
Also qualifying for the quarter-finals from Zone One are UTech Knights, who also have played eight games and won seven. The Knights are also on 21 points.
Meanwhile, Waulgrovians ‘A’, who lost last Saturday to the Pelicans, have also qualified as they completed their preliminary round of matches on 18 points from nine outings.
The other qualifying spot from Zone One is between Blades United ‘A’ with 12 points and a game in hand against UWI Pelicans to be played next Tuesday, while Mico ‘B’ have two games in hand against the Knights next Tuesday, and Cablepro on May 3.
Quarter-finalists from Zone Two are the unbeaten Mico ‘A’ with 18 points from six straight wins, and Police ‘A’, also with 18 points from seven starts. Mico have three remaining games, while Police ‘A’ have two outstanding matches.
GC Foster Strikers ‘A’ and Jamalco are each on 15 points from seven starts with two games in hand. GC Strikes ‘A’ are to face Mico ‘A’ and Jamalco in their last two games, while Jamalco have an earlier postponed game to be played. The two are looking to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Both Alexander Striker ‘A’ and Alpha ‘A’ each have 12 points from eight and seven matches, respectively, and are still in contention to make it to the quarter-finals, if GC Foster ‘A’ and Jamalco falter in their two remaining matches.
In other games, Blades United ‘A’ got the better of Tivoli 49-44; Molynes United ‘A’ defeated Jobs Lane United ‘A’ 42-13, and Alexander Strikers ‘A’ defeated Rivoli United ‘A’ 46-27.
