Six points should secure safety, says Sporting coach
TOLL GATE, Clarendon — Nigel Stewart, the Sporting Central Academy coach, believes his side need at least five more points to secure their place in next season’s Red Stripe Premier League.
The Clarendon side moved four points clear of the relegation zone following Sunday’s 1-0 victory over basement team August Town at the UWI, Mona Bowl.
Stewart now reckons two wins from their three remaining games should see Sporting to safety.
“Six or five points should do it,” he said. “But anything less than that would be asking too much of the teams around us. So, to be absolutely certain, we are aiming to win all three games.
“Plus, we are looking to finish as high as possible this season.”
Stewart was also full of praise for striker Francois Swaby, whose 37th-minute goal all but confirmed August Town’s exit from the premiership. The defeat leaves them seven points adrift of 10th-placed Humble Lion, who climbed out of the bottom two with a crucial 2-2 draw at Harbour View.
Portmore United now occupy the other relegation place.
“I think this season he has matured as a player,” said Stewart of Swaby, who has scored 14 goals. He added: “He now understands what it means to be the top player. And I think he is at the stage where he is looking towards a contract overseas.”
Sporting will next travel to semi-final-chasing Arnett Gardens, before hosting seventh-placed Rivoli United in their penultimate game of the season at Juici Patties Park.
Their final game of the season will be played at Drewsland against league leaders Waterhouse.
