Tsetsi looks to put ‘Lights Out’ on ‘Dangerous’ Richmond
FOLLOWING his narrow failure to win last year’s edition, Tsetsi ‘Lights Out’ Davis of Team Jamaica returns to the boxing arena in good shape against Team Caribbean’s Derrick ‘Dangerous’ Richmond in this year’s Wray & Nephew Contender Boxing series main challenge with great expectations at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium today at approximately 9:30 pm. With two three-rounders carded among amateurs, fight time is at 7:30 pm.
The fighters will compete for a share of approximately $3 million in prize money with the winner raking in $2 million and the title of Jamaica Ultimate Welterweight Boxer. The runner-up will pocket $500,000; third place, $250,000, and fourth place, $200,000.
Over the past weeks both fighters were going through their paces with great diligence and for that, a keen battle is anticipated.
However, Davis, 36, is still fuming over lost opportunity after his failure to succeed at the penultimate stage of last year’s edition, and will no doubt return to action in a no-nonsense mood.
Be that as it may, the younger Richmond, who has a wholesome ring record of three fights with no loss and one draw, is still in the process of learning his craft, but could make his 10-year youth advantage tell and surprise the older Davis.
With both fighters out to prove themselves worthy contenders to advance to round two and move out of the preliminary stages, the excitement and competitiveness of the series is expected to continue.
A win for Davis, with a ring record of nine wins against three losses will maintain the dominance of Team Jamaica and increase their win ratio to 4-1, while a win for Richmond could further enhance the excitement that the introduction of Team Caribbean element has brought to the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum CBA’s Wednesday night at the fights.
