Smokers, Hornets Masters top Hanover, St James Street Football
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Smokers of Hanover and Hornets Masters of St James are the two newest qualifiers for the finals of the LIME Street football competition after exciting competitions last weekend.
On Saturday at Rusea’s High in Lucea, Smokers upset favourites Future Boys 2-1 in extra time, while a day later two late goals from Ainsworth Thompson took Hornets Masters to a thrilling 4-2 win over a youthful Nomads at the Montego Bay Sports Complex car park.
Both winners got $100,000 each plus a chance to win the $1 million prize for the team that wins the national title and the chance to represent Jamaica at a similar event in Trinidad later in the year.
On Saturday after getting a bye in the first round when Williamsfield Ballers failed to show, Smokers then beat Upsetters 3-1 on penalties in the quarter-finals, then eliminated Blazers Youths 2-0 in the semi-finals.
In the other half of the bracket, Future Boys were consistently solid, beating Home Boys 3-1 in the first round, Guango Tree Youths in the quarter-finals, and then got by Rum Side 2-0 in extra time in the semi-finals after they had played out a 2-2 draw.
Ricardo Facey gave Smokers the lead early in the second half after a scoreless 15-minute first half, but Shimon Tavares equalised in the 27th minute, three minutes before full time to force a five-minute period of extra time.
Player/coach Dwayne Smith then scored two minutes into the extra period as his team upset the favourites.
Dylan Evans of beaten finalists Future Boys won the award for the most goals, after he scored six times.
In Montego Bay on Sunday, Hornets Masters rallied in both the semi-finals and final to crown themselves champions. They exploded for four goals in four minutes to beat Green Heights Strikers 4-1 in the semi-final, then scored three times in the final three minutes to beat Nomads 4-2 in the final.
Nomads had beaten Cornwall Courts Baghdad 2-1 on penalty kicks in their semi-final game.
After a close but scoreless first half, Nomads took the lead in the 20th minute, but Hornets Masters hit back almost immediately through Kevin Lee a minute later.
Aldino Hart then gave Hornets the lead in the 23rd minute, and just as they were about to try to work the clock to preserve the victory, Wayneton Brooks levelled the scores in the 28th minute.
Thompson, however, returned to the game after a brief period of rest and blasted them into the lead in the 30th minute before adding the icing on the cake a minute into stoppage.
As in Hanover a day earlier, a player from the losing team got the top scorer award after Dorel Jewery had scored six times coming into the final.
