As was anticipated, Team Jamaica made it 3-1 after four fights when Ramel ‘Sub Zero’ Lewis gained an honourable split decision victory over Gardel ‘The Judge’ Roberts of Team Caribbean in an action packed and bruising contest in the 2014 edition of the Wray & Nephew Contender Boxing series at the Chinese Benevolent Auditorium on Wednesday night.

The decision was honourable in that despite the disparity in the win/loss record of the two fighters, Lewis with a better win record had to work overtime to force the decision against the tough as steel Barbadian journeyman in a closely contested fight.

So much so that when ring announcer Oliver Hardie made the announcement in favour of Lewis — after judge Clifford Brown scored the fight 58-56 to Roberts and judges Keith Brown and Lindell Irons scored it 58-56 in favour of Lewis — it was met with great satisfaction from the enthusiastic crowd who turned up to cheer on their local boy at the Old Hope Road venue.

Before the fight, ‘The Judge’ had promised to put the ‘Sub Zero’ monster behind bars, but came up short on his promise.

As both being of the same ilk, the latter used his different special moves to set them apart.

After the fight a confident Lewis declared the he was never in any trouble during the fight.

“The main objective was to go the distance,” he said, and get some rounds under his belt for the more challenging rounds to come. Admitting that he was caught with a few telling shots, Lewis said they were not as effective a they might have appeared.

“I wanted the workout I got one and am satisfied with it,” Lewis said.

Roberts said flatly that he was very disappointed with his performance. He said that he had personal issues with his wifebeing sick and could not get to train satisfactorily.

Asked about the heavy shots taken from Lewis, he responded that “I am tough”.

“If I could have trained as I wanted for this series, the result would have been different,” laments Roberts.

Uriah Grant, who boasts a victory over Thomas ‘The Hotman’ Hearns in winning the IBF World Cruiserweight title in 2000 and who was at ringside said: “It was good fight, but they have to continue fighting if they are to succeed in realising their dreams.”
