Young Sunshine Girls steamroll St Lucia 48-5
JAMAICA’S Under-16 netballers made it two wins from two games with an effortless 48-5 victory over St Lucia at the 14th Jean Pierre Youth Netball Tournament in Antigua and Barbuda yesterday.
Goalshooter Tracy Francis sank 36 of her 45 attempts in leading Jamaica to their second consecutive win following their opening 55-14 thrashing of Dominica on Sunday. Goal attack Nicole Lewis chipped in with five goals and reserve shooter Idara McCarthy hit seven goals from eight attempts.
Kamala Mangal netted all five goals for St Lucia from 10 attempts. Remarakbly, her striking partner Rochelle Leah Etienne, failed to make an attempt.
On Sunday, goal shooter Simone Gordon scored 51 of Jamaica’s 55 goals as they brushed aside Dominica, and were scheduled to hunt win number three against great rivals Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) in their second game at 7:00 pm yesterday.
On Monday, T&T defeated St Lucia 25-19 and based on that performance, should not be much of a trouble to the title favourites Jamaica.
Meanwhile, Barbados made it three wins from three games, dismissing Dominica 35-24 following victories over St Vincent and Grenadines, 30-20, and 36-16 over St Kitts.
On Thursday, the young Sunshine Girls will tackle Barbados in a topof-the-table clash, while St Lucia will tackle St Kitts with St Vincent and Grenadines taking on T&T.
In the Development section, Nevis are scheduled to play the Combined Youth team, and host Antigua and Barbuda play Grenada.
And in this the 60th anniversary of competitive netball for the Caribbean Netball Association (CNA), international superstar Romelda Aiken of Jamaica has been nominated as one of the former Under-16 players to receive an award, which is being given to a person who has served the sport with distinction.
Molly Rhone, former president of the Jamaica Netball Association and the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA), will also receive a Personal Achievement Award.
