St Catherine Racers on a roll in Berger Elite League netball
ST Catherine Racers, Manchester Spurs and Kingston Humming Birds registered wins in the third round of the Berger Elite League on Friday night at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston.
The losing teams were St James Sharpes, St Ann Orchids, and Clarendon Gaters, respectively.
Scores: Racers defeated Sharpes 40-37, with Sabrina Spence, 23, and Anna-Kay Griffiths, 16, being the main scorers. Kerrisa Kesna with 35 from 43 attempts was on fire for Sharpes.
The Spurs got the better of the Orchids 41-40 with Shantal Slater, 34 from 36 attempts, being the main scorer, while Shanice Beckford, 17, and Gizelle Allison, eight, contributed the most points for the Orchids, who tried several combinations in their match.
The Humming Birds stopped the Gaters 32-25 in a low-scoring match that saw the Gaters getting only one point in the third quarter. Elaine Davis, 22, and Kadie-Ann Dehaney, 17, were the top scorers for the Humming Birds and the Gaters, respectively.
The Racers with two wins are the only team to win all their matches played with a match in hand, while the Orchids lost all three matches and should be eliminated at the end of the preliminary round. There are two more rounds to be played.
The next round of matches will be played on Friday at the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston.
The Racers and the Gaters will meet today in Mineral Heights for their second-round match. That match is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.
